Barking Up The Wrong Tree Page

Sometimes, do you feel as if you are barking up the wrong tree? Well, don’t feel alone. My old hound dog has this same feeling sometimes, that is why she always watches closely whenever she gets a critter up a tree.

But it does happen on a rare occasion, that the wily raccoon outsmarts her and she just barks at that tree as the critter heads off to the next county. My friend, Charlie, who lived in Hendersonville, North Carolina gave me my hound dog. He raised Treeing Walker Hounds specifically for hunting raccoon and possum. Since the only hunting I do is for fish in the Gulf of Mexico, the supply of raccoons to tree never dwindles out here in rural Levy County, Florida where my wife Marvi and I live.

So my old hound dog has plenty of critters to tree and bark at. Since she is too old to catch anything, unless it is already run over and flattened out on the road, the squirrels, raccoons and possum around here know her well and have as much fun tricking her as she has running around chasing them.

There is something special about the sound of hounds on an active trail. Their voice changes as they get closer to when they finally get some critter up a tree. You can tell just what is going on with the hunt from miles away, listening to the different voices of each dog as the hunt progresses.
