Battery Pier - Apalachicola

This harbor scene is from Apalachicola, Florida, a small fishing village on the Gulf Coast of Florida’s “panhandle “ region. The scene depicts a fishing party coming back in after a day of fishing, with the ever present pelicans waiting to get a little of their fair share of the catch.

The pelicans really do earn their portion, as the fishermen watch the pelicans out on the Gulf diving for bait fish and that let’s them know where the schools of fish are located. This close relationship between the fishermen and the pelicans goes back hundreds of years along this coast and these birds are well protected by the fisherman.

In the 1970’s, when I worked as a Landscape Designer for the Florida Department of Natural Resources, I was invited by the City of Apalachicola to design this little pier and boat ramp in 1977. It was built a year later.

Twenty five years later, I went to Apalachicola to make some new paintings and sketches of the area, and also to look at some of the parks that I designed for the citizens of Florida back in the 1970’s.

It is one of my greatest rewards in life, as a designer, to see my work come to life, and watch my fellow citizens enjoy the spaces that I helped to create along with the many other designers and builders that helped to accomplish these public projects.
