Cats Fish Cedar Key

This is a scene behind the Mermaid Landing Cottages at Cedar Key, Florida. Cedar Key is a sleepy fishing village on Florida’s “Big Bend” area of the Gulf coast. There is a little fish cleaning table behind the cottages where the resident cat has set up shop. One day, Marvi and I were staying at the cottages and after we returned with a redfish, our little friend watched very patiently for his share of the proceeds.

Of course it is wise not to turn your back too long while there is a fish on the cleaning table or you may just find it missing. The fact that this was a twenty pound fish and the cat is only five pounds does not reduce the risk of our little friend taking the whole catch. But he is very polite while he waits.

This cat earns his living by keeping the mice population away from the area and in return he gets to partake in the daily catch. Cedar Key is a very animal friendly community and the cats are especially adept at catching crabs and small fish in the shallow pools that are created when the tide goes out.
