The scene depicts the waterfront dock at Cedar Key 100 years ago when the large schooners docked offshore and the small boats would shuttle the goods to large sailing vessels beyond the barrier islands of Snake Key and Seahorse Key. Cedar Key, Florida is a small fishing village in the Big Bend area of Florida’s Gulf coast, about 10 miles south of the mouth of the Suwannee River. Cedar Key was the destination of Florida’s first cross state railroad with the opposite terminal at Fernandino Beach just north of Jacksonville on the Atlantic coast. The railroad was completed in 1861 but the tracks were soon torn up at the beginning of the Civil War. After the war was over, the railroad resumed service transporting manufactured goods from the north from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key. Then the goods were loaded on sailing ships to travel up the Mississippi. The return trip brought, cotton and rice from the Mississippi to Cedar Key and then the railroad shipped the goods back across the peninsula to Fernandina Beach for transport to the north. The main traffic of this railroad line was replaced in the early twentieth century when Plant built a new cross Florida line from Jacksonville to Tampa.
