Pelican Convention Cedar Key Print

The picture depicts pelicans on the roof of an old shed behind the Sea Breeze Restaurant at Cedar Key, Florida. The building no longer is standing, it was washed away by Hurricane Francis in 2004. This was the view from my Dock Street studio. Everyday the pelicans would congregate on the shed waiting for the wind and tide to be just right, and then they would fly off as a group out onto the open Gulf of Mexico to hunt fish.

The local fisherman would watch these pelicans taking off as the sign to also go out and catch fish. They would watch where the birds were diving and that is where the big schools of bait fish are, with the mackerel and large “gator” trout under the schools.
