Jacobs Ladder Print by Mike Segal

The painting depicts Jacob asleep on a rock with angels going up and down a ladder that goes up to heaven. The green line at the bottom separates the physical from the spiritual world.

I started painting bible scenes in 1984 when Marvi and I lived in Valle Crucis, North Carolina, a little valley six miles south of Boone, NC. My neighbors had a Wednesday night prayer group and they asked me if I would make them some sketches of each weeks bible section.

I found the work so enjoyable that I began to use my weekly sketches to make paintings. The scene of Jacob’s Ladder is one of the few action dreams in the Book of Genesis and I do not claim to understand the full meaning of the passage.

This painting has gone through many years of redefining and has arrived at what I feel is one of my very best Bible pictures. I hope it will be as much of an inspiration to you as it has been for me. I continue to make paintings from the Bible, however, I do not place any allegorical interpretations in these paintings, I sincerely attempt to tell the story as it is written and leave the interpretation to the viewer.
